Communicating during COVID-19: 3 Strategies for Social Media
Since mid-March, social media usage is up dramatically! Facebook usage is at 78%. Instagram usage is at 49%, and Twitter is at 35%. People are online—and they want to hear from you! At Articulate Solutions, a Bay Area marketing firm and creative agency, we have developed three communication strategies for social media to make your social media marketing more meaningful and effective.
- Be sensitive to the situation. If you have previously scheduled advertising or social media posts, review the messaging to be sure it doesn’t come across as “tone deaf” given the circumstances. For example, don’t post photos with large groups of people gathered together. If possible, make changes so you can still market your business in a positive way without seeming insensitive. Even while shelter-in-place orders are beginning to loosen, your customers still expect your business to respect their safety and health.
- Develop on-brand messaging. Spend the extra time to create a messaging campaign that will unite all of your communication efforts. Accompany your strategic words with strategic images that visually inspire your audience. You should also have a purpose. Develop a social media plan with ROI in mind; there’s really no point in having an active social media presence if you don’t have a plan. Every post should have some type of call-to-action that is trackable and measurable. Even if you’re only looking to boost engagement, plan for it and track it so you can make informed decisions later. Compare different approaches to see what works best for your business.
- Consistency is key. Even if your doors are currently closed to the public, that doesn’t mean you should stop all social media. Now more than ever, especially as the economy begins to open back up, organizations should be extremely active on all their profiles because the general public is online more than normal. Be a source of inspiration and joy for your audience. Just be sure your company “voice” remains consistent. It’s important your customers feel like they can trust your brand wherever they interact with it, and that begins with using the same tone across all platforms.
Social media is just one of many important tools for communicating with your customers during COVID-19. In our next blog article, we’ll look at some key strategies for business development to help your business not just survive—but thrive—in these challenging times.
